  18. <p>     Southern California has long been a place where new ideas
  19. take wing, sometimes literally. The latest example: using hang
  20. gliders to spot forest fires before they burn out of control.
  21. </p>
  22. <p>     The volunteer patrols will be conducted by three
  23. hang-gliding clubs in the Angeles National Forest, where
  24. firebugs have started at least 20 blazes this year. The
  25. radio-equipped gliders will alert rangers if they see an
  26. arsonist at work. Says U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jim Stump:
  27. "Every little bit the hang gliders can do helps."
